I’ve had a lot of fun discovering things in my yard in my new house. So far so good ; ) I was super thrilled to find that there was a chive plant! I remember when I was a kid my grandma had one of these. Any time we explored the back yard there was chive eating involved. Straight from the plant. Yum! Here is another milk kefir based spread that I made. Really you can use any ratio that you like. Have fun with it and think outside the box.
- 1 1/2 c. strained milk kefir
- 1/4 c. Chives, chopped
- 3 Garlic cloves (more or less depending on how you like it), minced
- 1/4 tsp black Pepper
- 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil plus extra for drizzling on top
- Add all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Drizzle a little on top and enjoy. I like to cut up veggies, or on top of eggs or an omelet or you could use it the way you use sour cream. Really just be creative
When I was growing up my mom loved to cook foods from other countries. So I grew up with an appreciation of all kinds of foods. However, my absolute favorite is Greek food. You may see lots of those kinds of recipes here on this blog. Here is my recipe for Tzatziki sauce. Enjoy!
- 2 c. thick strained Kefir
- 1 medium Cucumber
- 2-4 cloves of garlic (to your taste)
- 2 tbsp Olive oil
- Salt and Pepper to Taste
- Splash of Vinegar
- 2 tbsp Fresh or 2 tsp of Dried Dill
The Night Before: Strain the Kefir with a Tea towel hung over a bowl for a few hours. Place the kefir ‘bag’ on a strainer and place over the bowl in the fridge overnight.
The Next Day:
- Coarsely grate the peeled cucumber and squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
- Mix all ingredients in a bowl.
- Serve with grilled pitas, eat as a sauce for gyros, use as a dip for veggies or anything else you can think of : )
I was thinking about my journey into this world of traditional cooking and living. Sometimes I forget how long it actually took me to get to this point. One step at time trying to reach a goal and still working at it. Having now come a long way from where I was I can say there are a few things that I think are super easy to do and yet have the most benefits. Here is a list in no particular order.
- Bone Broth – In my humble opinion this is one of the most beneficial traditional foods. It helps your joints and a whole host of other things. You don’t need to babysit the stove for this one. I throw the bones in a crock pot, fill with water until it covers the bones by about 1 inch, and give it a splash of apple cider vinegar. Turn the crock on high for about an hour and then turn down to low for another 24 to 48 hours. I always get wonderful broth that gels. (This is what you want.)
- Fermented Cod Liver Oil – not just regular fish oil but this one is full of probiotics and the nutrients that are way more bio available (better absorbed and utilized by the body).
- Milk Kefir – So many wonderful bacteria and yeast. My skin has never been more healthy then when I started drinking this! In fact I no longer have to use lotion after my skins gets wet. Even after a shower. I never thought in my life I would ever see this day!
There are of course other things you can add but in my experience these have been the easiest things that offer that biggest punch. My advise is to find the ultimate goal, break it down into smaller goals and then take it one thing at a time. You will get there I promise ; )
So, we’ll see how this whole blogging thing goes. My goal is for others to glean what I learn about living my natural life. Or at least attempting to anyways.
